A schismatic church led by a bishop who was once a reality TV star is causing ructions in the Tarn region of southwestern France.

Laurent Lenne, who was 'ordained' a bishop in the "Apostolic and Ecumenical Church" in December 2018, has certainly disturbed the peaceful Catholic communities of the area.

His latest news was that "Bishop Lenne" ordained a new priest Sept. 28 in the small community of Saint-Marcel-Campes.

He is a singer-songwriter, former journalist and one-time candidate on the TF1 TV program Secret Story but is unapologetic, saying: "It's not about emptying the churches!"

A bishop of this church since December 2018, he claims to be of "Catholic faith" and says he would have liked "more dialogue on the part of the diocese."

Lenne claims that the Apostolic and Ecumenical Church is more open-minded than the Roman Catholic Church.

"We welcome divorced and remarried people, LGBT people and we accept the marriage of priests and the female priesthood," says the man who is himself married and a father.

On its website, the Apostolic and Ecumenical Church of France defines itself as follows: "Our liturgy is Catholic but we do not depend on Rome."

This self-promotion continues: "First of all, try to get to know the Churches (Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox). If, after a time of discernment, you feel ready to receive baptism in the Ecumenical Apostolic Church of France, we will then begin a year-long preparation.

"This will be followed by the celebration of your baptism with the community."

No valid sacrament
In a statement dated Sept. 5, Archbishop Jean Legrez of Albi warned Catholic communities in his diocese not to be misled.

"Confusion is fueled by the vocabulary, gestures and vestments used by members of the Apostolic and Ecumenical Church of France," he said.

"The Archdiocese of Albi wishes to make it known that this organization has no connection with the Roman Catholic Church."

He added that "the faithful and the Catholic communities of Tarn cannot under any circumstances have recourse to the services they offer, in particular the celebrations presented in this context as sacraments (baptism, marriage, Eucharist, ordination) since they are in communion neither with the local bishop nor with the pope."

Having arrived in France in the 2000s and since then present in the Var, Gers, Nord, Alpes-Maritimes and Creuse, the dissident Church was born in Brazil, from a movement started by Bishop Carlos Duarte Costa of Botucatu,.

He was excommunicated by Pope Pius XII in 1945 after coming into conflict with Rome.
