Tiene razón, los abusos no se limitan ni a la iglesia católica ni a otras y es hora que se tomen medidas serias. Yo, como cristiana, digo que ningún cristiano debe ser miembro de una Iglesia cuyos representantes cometen crimines pues pertenecer a ella es traicionar a Cristo. Ser cristiano y pertenecer a ésta iglesia u a otra que cometa, ignore y excuse crimenes es incompatible.

"Ha llegado la hora de colaborar juntos para erradicar dicha brutalidad del cuerpo de nuestra humanidad, adoptando todas las medidas necesarias ya en vigor a nivel internacional y a nivel eclesial. Ha llegado la hora de encontrar el justo equilibrio entre todos los valores en juego y de dar directrices uniformes para la Iglesia". Un día después de la histórica asunción de culpabilidad de toda la Iglesia por la lacra de la pederastia, el Vaticano anunció que asumirá, al fin, los criterios de la OMS para frenar los abusos sexuales a menores. Una medida inédita, que si no se cumple supondrá el fin de la credibilidad de la institución y, posiblemente, del propio pontificado de Francisco.

Una decisión que formaba parte de las 'líneas rojas' solicitadas por las víctimas, y que supone, en la práctica, el fin del encubrimiento, un trabajo por la transparencia y, entre otras cosas, acabar con el secreto pontificio, que ha impedido, por ejemplo, saber quiénes son los curas pederastas, o que las víctimas puedan tener acceso a sus expedientes eclesiásticos. Algo que no ha podido hacer, por ejemplo, la víctima de los abusos en Astorga, que a día de hoy no sabe cómo fue el juicio que condenó a su abusador.

Después de tres días de reuniones, en las que se han encontrado por primera vez en la historia 190 responsables de los episcopados, el Papa anunció que la Iglesia en todo el mundo cumplirá los criterios de Naciones Unidas en su plan INSPIRE, que sostiene, entre otras prioridades, la necesidad de la transparencia, la acogida preferencial a las víctimas o el trabajo por la igualdad de género.

Habrá documento papal
No se quedó en eso Francisco. En la rueda posterior al final de la cumbre, el ex portavoz vaticano (y moderador de los debates), Federico Lombardi anunció que, finalmente, sí habrá documento del Papa. Un 'Motu Proprio' sobre “la protección de los menores y de las personas vulnerables”, que vendrá acompañado de una nueva ley del Estado de la Ciudad del Vaticano, y de la publicación de un vademécum, de obligado cumplimiento, para que todos los obispos del mundo “puedan comprender claramente sus deberes y tareas”. Una tarea que arrancará mañana mismo con una 'minicumbre' entre los coordinadores del encuentro y los responsables de la Curia vaticana.

El anuncio de Lombardi pone el broche a cinco días de reuniones, que arrancaron el miércoles con una reunión de un grupo de doce víctimas con responsables vaticanos, y prosiguió de jueves a sábado con una docena de ponencias, directamente solicitadas por Francisco, en la que se pusieron las bases de lo que será el futuro documento papal, y que pueden resumirse en cuatro puntos fuerza: acabar con el secreto pontificio, obligar a la denuncia ante las autoridades civiles de cualquier indicio de abuso, elaborar listas de curas pederastas o de investigaciones abiertas y, sobre todo, colocar a las víctimas en el centro.

“Llevar ante la justicia” a todo abusador o encubridor
A lo largo de la cumbre, ocho testimonios de víctimas de abusos relataron el horror sufrido y exigieron a la Iglesia que proclamara un 'Basta ya', con hechos concretos. Este sábado, además, por primera vez en la historia, toda la Iglesia se declaró culpable de “haber protegido a los culpables y silenciado a los que han sufrido el mal”. Una declaración de intenciones que estuvo a punto de truncarse con la desafortunada expresión del Papa, cuando afirmó que “todo feminismo es un machismo con faldas” y que amenazó con echar por tierra el hecho de que la mitad de los ponentes en el simposio eran mujeres, algo inédito en la historia de una Iglesia que todavía sigue pecando de un patriarcado sangrante. Y con un escándalo en ciernes, el de los abusos a religiosas, que la Iglesia habrá de abordar con decisión en los próximos meses.

Este domingo, durante la misa conclusiva, Francisco lanzó un duro alegato contra los abusos a menores, que llegó a comparar con los sacrificios humanos que hace siglos se hacían a los dioses tribales. Un niño es sagrado, proclamó el Papa, quien añadió que "la Iglesia no se cansará de hacer todo lo necesario para llevar ante la justicia a cualquiera que haya cometido tales crímenes".

"Ningún abuso debe ser jamás encubierto ni infravalorado", dijo Francisco. "Quiero decirlo con toda claridad: si en la Iglesia se descubre un solo caso de abuso, ese caso será afrontado con la mayor seriedad", lo cual incluye la total transparencia en los casos. Se acabó -o al menos eso debe suceder, si realmente el Vaticano asume los criterios de Naciones Unidas- la falta de información sobre los procesos y las investigaciones, y la Iglesia tendrá que ofrecer datos concretos sobre esta plaga en todo el mundo. La experiencia en Estados Unidos, Irlanda, Australia o Chile demuestran que es posible hacerlo. Y necesario.

"Escuchar, tutelar, proteger y cuidar a los menores abusados, explotados y olvidados, allí donde se encuentren", es otra de las claves. Colocar a las víctimas en el centro, en ese 'giro copernicano' del que hablaba el arzobispo de Brisbane en una medida homilía encargada especialmente por el Papa. Acabar con la autodefensa y proteger, a todos los niveles, a las víctimas. También en lo económico. Aunque haya que vender terrenos o cerrar parroquias para pagar indemnizaciones o tratamientos. La Iglesia debe volver a ser un lugar en el que todos confíen. Y ahora, todavía, eso no sucede.

Siete puntos clave, los apuntados por la OMS, que incluyen proteger, investigar, purificar, formar, acompañar. Que suponen "reafirmar la exigencia de la unidad de los obispos en la aplicación de parámetros que tengan valor de normas y no solo de orientación". Esto es: que ningún obispo, en ningún lugar, pueda decir que él no sabía qué hacer. Habrá casos, muchos, lamentablemente, porque muchos son los prelados que siguen sin creen que esta lacra sea real, o que este Papa sea legítimo. O que continúan viendo a los supervivientes de abusos como enemigos de la Iglesia.

El futuro son las víctimas
¿Qué pasará a partir de ahora? El tiempo y las víctimas lo dirán. Pero sólo una cosa parece clara: si la Iglesia no es capaz de cumplir con esta hoja de ruta, pasará a ser una institución irrelevante a los ojos del mundo (al menos del occidental). Por el momento, los supervivientes parecen divididos.

Así, mientras Miguel Hurtado -la víctima de abusos en Montserrat- denunciaba que las palabras del Papa habían supuesto “un guantazo a todas las víctimas de pederastia de los cinco continentes que han llegado hasta Roma para exigir explicaciones”, y que las medidas “son muy genéricas, sin concreción”, el presidente de Infancia Robada, Juan Cuatrecasas, apuntaba a eldiario.es que “las palabras del papa son muy positivas, aunque las recibimos con cautela y excepticismo”, pues “es necesario crear una estructrura externa que monitorice y controle el cumplimiento estricto” de todo lo anunciado. “Las palabras del Papa son positivas, pero sólo serán efectivas cuando la maquinaria propuesta comience a moverse y veamos hechos, no solo palabras”. Palabra de víctimas, ¿palabra de Iglesia?

Archbishop Viganò Strikes Again, Targets 1960's as Start of Abuse Crisis

Five days ago, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò contributed the following statement to the National Catholic Register, which had invited him to be part of a symposium in anticipation of next week’s Vatican summit meeting on the clerical sexual abuse crisis.

Some of Archbishop Viganò’s more vocal traditionalist critics enjoy pointing out that, since His Excellency has been part of the post-conciliar Church, he must be considered part of the problem rather than the solution. From the moment we reported on the first Viganò letter, we have pushed back against this myopic point of view.

It is interesting to note now, in this latest Viganò letter, that the good Archbishop highlights the years leading up to and including the Second Vatican Council as when sexual abuse in the clergy became a massive problem. The Archbishop also takes a very pre-conciliar position on the admittance of homosexuals to the priesthood. I'd say if we were to scratch the surface of Archbishop Viganò just a bit, we'd find a traditionalist.

Despite Grave Problems, the Lord Will Never Abandon His Church

I thank you for inviting me to take part in this symposium on “Abuse and the Way to Healing” in anticipation of the upcoming bishops’ summit at the Vatican. My contribution will draw on my personal experience of 51 years of priesthood.

It is evident to all that a primary cause of the present terrible crisis of sexual abuse committed by ordained clergy, including bishops, is the lack of proper spiritual formation of candidates to the priesthood. That lack, in turn, is largely explained by the doctrinal and moral corruption of many seminary formators, corruption that increased exponentially beginning in the 1960s.

I entered a pontifical seminary in Rome and began my studies at the Gregorian University when I was 25 years old. It was 1965, just months before the end of Vatican II. I couldn’t help but notice, not only in my own college but also in many others in Rome, that some seminarians were very immature and that these houses of formation were marked by a general and very serious lack of discipline.

A few examples will suffice. Seminarians sometimes spent the night outside my seminary, as the supervision was woefully inadequate. Our spiritual director was in favor of priestly ordination ad tempus — the idea that ordained priesthood could be a merely temporary status.

At the Gregorian, one of the professors of moral theology favored situation ethics. And some classmates confided to me that their spiritual directors had no objection to their presenting themselves for priestly ordination despite their unresolved and continual grave sins against chastity.

Certainly, those who suffer from deep-seated same-sex attraction should never be admitted to seminary. Moreover, before any seminarian is accepted for ordination, he must not only strive for chastity but actually achieve it. He must already be living chaste celibacy peacefully and for a prolonged period of time, for if this is lacking, the seminarian and his formators cannot have the requisite confidence that he is called to the celibate life.

Bishops have the paramount responsibility for the formation of their candidates to the priesthood. Any bishop who has covered up abuse or seduction of minors, vulnerable adults or adults under a priest’s pastoral care, including seminarians, is not fit for that responsibility or for any episcopal ministry and should be removed from his office.

I am praying intensely for the success of the February summit. Although I would rejoice greatly if the summit were successful, the following questions reveal that there is no sign of a genuine willingness to attend to the real causes of the present situation:

• Why will the meeting focus exclusively on the abuse of minors? These crimes are indeed the most horrific, but the crises in the United States and Chile that have largely precipitated the upcoming summit have to do with abuses committed against young adults, including seminarians, not only against minors. Almost nothing has been said about sexual misconduct with adults, which is itself a grave abuse of pastoral authority, whether or not the relationship was “consensual.”
• Why does the word “homosexuality” never appear in recent official documents of the Holy See? This is by no means to suggest that most of those with a homosexual inclination are abusers, but the fact remains that the overwhelming majority of abuse has been inflicted on post-pubescent boys by homosexual clerics. It is mere hypocrisy to condemn the abuse and claim to sympathize with the victims without facing up to this fact honestly. A spiritual revitalization of the clergy is necessary, but it will be ultimately ineffectual if it does not address this problem.
• Why does Pope Francis keep and even call as his close collaborators people who are notorious homosexuals? Why has he refused to answer legitimate and sincere questions about these appointments? In doing so he has lost credibility on his real will to reform the Curia and fight the corruption.

In my third testimony, I begged the Holy Father to face up to the commitments he himself made in assuming his office as Successor of Peter. I pointed out that he took upon himself the mission of confirming his brothers and guiding all souls in following Christ along the way of the cross. I urged him then, and I now urge him again, to tell the truth, repent, show his willingness to follow the mandate given to Peter and, once converted, to confirm his brothers (Luke 22:32).

I pray that the bishops gathered in Rome will remember the Holy Spirit, whom they received with the imposition of hands, and carry out their responsibility to represent their particular Churches by firmly asking for, and insisting on, an answer to the above questions during the summit.

Indeed, I pray that they will not return to their countries without proper answers to these questions, for to fail in this regard would mean abandoning their own flocks to the wolves and allowing the entire Church to suffer dreadful consequences.

Despite the problems I have described, I continue to have hope, because the Lord will never abandon his Church.
