L
ettuce shortage in Europe as bad weather hits farms

LONDON (AP) — Europe is short of lettuce, broccoli and other vegetables due to bad weather, leading some supermarkets in Britain to start rationing produce.

A succession of droughts, floods and cold weather in southern European countries has hurt agricultural yields, creating a drop in supply felt mainly by importing countries to the north.

Stores in Britain were rationing Friday the number of lettuces shoppers can buy, with some removing iceberg, sweet gem and romaine varieties from their online offerings. Similar shortages earlier affected courgettes, broccoli and cabbage.

Shoppers in Britain shared images of bare shelves under the hashtags #lettucecrisis and #courgettecrisis.

Analyst Rob Gregory of PlanetRetail posted a photo on Twitter of empty boxes in a Tesco supermarket. The picture showed a sign reading: "Due to continued weather problems in Spain, there is a shortage on Iceberg and other varied lettuce products. To protect the availability for all customers, we are limiting bulk purchases to three per person."

Gregory tweeted: "My local Tesco also affected by the lettuce and salad rationing. Not much there to ration though!"

British supermarket chain Asda said in a statement that, "Contrary to popular belief it seems the rain in Spain doesn't fall mainly on the plane and a run of unusually bad weather has resulted in availability issues on a small number of salad items and vegetables such as courgettes and aubergines."

Spain's federation of vegetable exporters, Fepex, said it was trying to keep up supply to European markets.

But even in Spain overall production of vegetables was 30 percent below normal levels, due to the bad weather over the past three months, said the group. Cold weather and snow in January also delayed new crops and made a full recovery of production levels unlikely until April, Fepex said.

Supermarkets RATION salads and veg after storms in Spain devastate crops with shortages due to last until APRIL (and a box of 12 iceberg lettuces is even being offered on Gumtree for £50)
  • Supermarkets started rationing vegetables following a shortage due to floods
  • Morrisons has imposed a limit of two iceberg lettuces for every customer
  • The shortage began with aubergines and has now spread to other vegetables
  • Price of Iceberg lettuces - normally available for 50p - has risen to more than £1

Supermarkets are rationing vegetables after snow and storms in the Mediterranean have caused shortages which will last until April.

Supermarket shelves have been left bare as shoppers rushed to stock up on greens.

Prices have rocketed with courgettes, normally costing 45p, being sold for £1.90 and lettuces, normally 40p, costing £1.17.

Morrisons has imposed a limit of three heads of broccoli and two iceberg lettuces per customer throughout its 492 stores and Tesco has limited customers to three lettuces.

Profiteering: A hopeful entrepreneur is selling a box of iceberg lettuces on Gumtree for an eye-watering £50

The crisis isn't only affecting supermarkets as the online stores of the big grocers are restricting supply by listing many popular vegetables as unavailable.

And garden centre chain Wyevale Garden Centres has seized on the crisis by buying in more 'grow your own' vegetable seeds and plants so families can become more self-sufficient.

A hopeful entrepreneur is selling a box of iceberg lettuces on Gumtree for an eye-watering £50 as he tries to cash in on the vegetable shortage.

The seller named 'Dave' from Acocks Green in Birmingham is flogging a box of 12 'freshly picked' lettuces, which would normally cost £5, for £50, or £4.16 each.

Consumers can now expect shortages of iceberg lettuce, baby spinach, mixed leaves, rocket, lollo rossa, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, lemons, and oranges.

And industry leaders say these shortages and resulting high prices could last until April for some produce.

A Morrisons spokesman said: 'As a result of the fact that the Spanish harvest has been very difficult this year, we have just about enough coming in to supply our customers.

Morrisons: A sign in Greater Manchester read 'we are sorry that the recent extreme weather in Spain is affecting supply'

And Sainsbury's, with no rationing policy, said: 'Severe weather has affected crops, but we are working with our suppliers to maintain supply for our customers.'

The problem has become so serious that British wholesalers have taken the unusual step of importing produce from California, despite the high cost of air freight.

Where stores have vegetables, prices are considerably higher than a year ago. For example, the cost of an aubergine is up from 60p to 70p – 17per cent.

A pack of six standard salad tomatoes typically cost £1 a year ago, however they are now £1.37 at Morrisons or £1.40 at Asda.

A standard cauliflower is up 5 per cent to £1, a cucumber by 10 per cent to 50p, and a round lettuce is up 14 per cent to 40p.

Shoppers today expressed their concerns about the price rises and shortages.

Christina Parsons, 62, from Birmingham, told MailOnline: 'Prices are increasing all the time, a lot of the things in these supermarkets are a lot more pricey than they were a few months ago.

Hazel Swindles, left, said the crisis was affecting the way she plans meals. But Rob Wills, right, said: 'If there was a shortage of pies I'd be worried'

UK supermarkets hit by lettuce shortage

'The cost of petrol is rising too. It's an expensive time. When you're shipping so much from abroad there's that risk that something like this will happen'.

Laura Tranter, 23, said: 'I didn't realise broccoli and aubergines are affected as well. The fridge is going to be empty.'

Bernard Ryder, 76, said he thinks the situation has been worsened by the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

He said: 'It is an unstable time economically and people do get worried about these price rises.

Lynne Macguyre, 59, added: 'I'm fearful that it will discourage people from buying veg and cause them to buy unhealthy alternatives.'

At a Tesco superstore in the leafy south Manchester suburb of Didsbury, shoppers were not allowed to buy more than three iceberg lettuces at a time.

Worried shoppers: Christina Parsons, 62, said 'it's an expensive time' and Laura Tranter, 23, said: 'The fridge is going to be empty'

No courgettes were on display in the store's fruit and veg aisle, while stocks of butterhead and Ceasar lettuce were totally empty.

Hazel Swindles, a 45-year-old GP from Sale, south Manchester, said: 'The courgette crisis is affecting the way I plan meals. I tried to get some online and the website said they were out of stock, so I didn't expect there to be any here in store either, and there wasn't. It's been like that for a couple of weeks.'

ALAN TITCHMARSH HAPPY ABOUT CRISIS

Gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh has said he is pleased about the temporary lettuce shortage - because it reminds people not to take food for granted.

Supermarkets have put limits on the number of lettuces customers can buy following an extreme mix of weather conditions in southern Spain.

The former host of Gardeners' World and the Chelsea Flower Show said too many people do not think about where their food comes from.

He said: 'As long as it's there, people take it for granted.

'But we are dependent on climate and weather and growing skill and sometimes the weather throws things at you that you can't legislate for.

'It reminds people not to take food and food producers for granted.'
