How the British tabloids drove Meghan and Harry away
We only have ourselves to blame for the Sussexes' decision to step down from their roles

The headlines are apocalyptic - "Queen's fury at Megxit", "Meghan Markle and Prince Harry resign from the royal family leaving a trail of destruction" and "Queen ‘deeply upset’ at Harry and Meghan’s Royal exit sparking ‘civil war’".
The screeching hatred from today's British tabloids following the announcement that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are stepping down from their roles as senior royals reflects the way they have written about the couple for the past 12 months - with deep judgement, vitriol and righteous indignation, all mired with thinly veiled racism. Naturally, the bile targeted at Meghan and Harry today is tenfold anything Prince Andrew ever received - whose friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein caused even his own mother to fire him. Even the Queen's curt statement on the subject was telling - not once has she ever said she was "disappointed" in her son for his long-standing association with a sex offender. That news of Meghan and Harry stepping back from the family business is seen as more scandalous than a prince accused of having had sex with a 17-year-old victim of sex trafficking (an allegation he denies) is utterly depressing.

Sussex announcement was made earlier than planned

Although the frothing reaction from the British tabloids is predictable, it is confused. Publications including The Daily Mail and The Express have long wanted Meghan to "go back to America", yet now she is, everyone's terribly upset about it. Much airtime and sloppy journalism has been dedicated to portraying the duchess as a scheming social-climber only in it for the jewels, fame and money. And yet, of course her radical decision to take a step back and be financially independent has been met with thousands of "how dare theys?" As Hadley Freeman pointed out on Twitter, "these people are behaving like an abusive man who can’t believe his wife has finally left him."

It is of course the tabloids who are to blame for the Sussexes' decision to take a step back from their royal duties. This is a historic moment of our own making. Late last year, Prince Harry announced he was taking legal action against the tabloids for the “relentless propaganda” about his wife and described the human cost of such bullying treatment. "I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been,” he wrote. “Because in today’s digital age, press fabrications are repurposed as truth across the globe. One day’s coverage is no longer tomorrow’s chip-paper.” In October, Meghan tearfully talked about the media scrutiny that she's faced. "It's not enough to just survive something, right? That's not the point of life," she said. "You've got to thrive, you've got to feel happy. I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip. I tried, I really tried. But I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging."

The backlash towards Meghan and Harry began in earnest after she fell pregnant, which is what the right-wing press wanted amid much sexist, archaic chatter about her age when her fertility was openly questioned. But, somehow, the way in which the duchess was pregnant began annoy everyone. The way she cradled her stomach was described as "smug" and "repellent" by social media users. One tabloid supplement editor wrote, "Meghan would be well advised to take the ‘world’s only pregnant woman!’ vibes down a notch or two."

Meghan has reportedly headed back to Canada

Tensions rose again after the couple bucked another royal tradition and decided not to pose for pictures outside the hospital following the birth of their son, Archie. If proof was needed of racist views towards the duchess, consider the moment in May 2019 when BBC radio host Danny Baker was sacked after tweeting a picture of the couple holding hands with a chimpanzee with the caption, "Royal baby leaves hospital."

Then, in early July, the palace released another statement stipulating that his christening would be kept private with only official photos to be released. "But, it's what they're paid to do," cried the tabloids and more conservative members of the British public. The royal family is based on many traditions, and as time goes on and society evolves, it's unsurprising that some of those traditions should feel outdated. The facts remain that Meghan and Harry did give the press photos of their newborn; what they didn't do is insist that the duchess stand smiling outside a hospital just hours after she had given birth in full make-up and heels, while probably still bleeding. Different women's childbirth experiences are exactly that - different; there are different postpartum realities, but only the truly heartless would advocate that a woman should mask her pain, that to do so is her "duty".

Anyway, the show went on and with rumours of a feud between Meghan and the Duchess of Cambridge - because we all know that in private all women do is argue with one another and pull each other's hair out. Other Meghan moves that made the headlines negatively include her apparent inability to hold her own baby ("The Z-class actress looks messy, like she escaped from an asylum and stole a child from a park," wrote one sweet social media user); Elton John's decision to fly the family by private jet to his villa in Nice which was branded hypocritical of the couple given their focus on environmental causes (he later published an impassioned statement saying he paid for the plane to ensure their security, adding that the plane was carbon neutral, making an appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint); and of course the furore around Frogmore Cottage, and how much it cost the taxpayer to redecorate. The exterior of the Grade II listed building was refurbished through the Queen's Sovereign Grant as part of the monarch's "responsibility to maintain the upkeep of buildings with historical significance", while the interior refits were privately funded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. All the same, the couple were depicted as lavish, selfish Kardashian types keen to spend the taxpayers money with merry abandon.

Many commentators have raised the point that Harry never had a problem with the press until he met Meghan (which we don't necessarily know to be true - it's likely that he was just less vocal about it). But, regardless, it doesn't take much to work out what's behind this shift. The treatment of the tabloids towards his wife have reminded Harry of his late mother, who was killed following a car crash involving the paparazzi. "My deepest fear is history repeating itself,” he said. “I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.” Harry is doing what he can to protect the wellbeing of his wife and son. Going forward, the couple will not engage with the British press in the same way, scrapping the 'Royal Rota' system in favour of working with “grassroots” media organisations and “young, up-and-coming journalists”.

The Queen responds to Meghan & Harry stepping down

It's no surprise that Harry and Meghan want to be free of the restraints of being a royal and to earn their own money. The public will no longer have the right to criticise their choices if they're not paying for them and it's arguable that the couple would never have been able to uphold their values while others are picking up the tab. The issue of duty has been raised a lot since the Sussexes' announcement, focusing on indignation that Harry has turned his back on his royal obligations. But whom is our duty as people, regardless of background, really to - our family or our work? Harry has not left the royal family, he has taken a step back from having a senior role in the family business. It's important to note that privilege and wealth does not make you exempt from pain or sadness; it does not protect you from bullying or harassment, nor is it fair that the former be used as a trade-off for the other.
They have faced the same level of scrutiny as many royal couples, the Cambridges among them, but with different, unrealistic expectations. We wanted them to both champion the traditions of the monarchy, while simultaneously modernising it. We wanted a royal couple who we felt better represented us, but it's a damning state of affairs when the world's most famous interracial couple no longer feels welcome here. Anyway, back to Prince Andrew.
