No survivors’ from Germanwings crash in Alps with 148 aboard, French ministry says
Debris found at 2,000 metres in a difficult to reach area, French official says. Airbus 320 was en route to Dusseldorf from Barcelona
PARIS—French President Francois Hollande says there are likely “no survivors” in the crash of a passenger plane in the French Alps with 148 people on board.

The French ministry of transport also confirmed “no survivors” among the 142 passengers, two pilots and four flight attendants, France 24 reported live just before 8 a.m. Toronto time.

The Germanwings Airbus plane crashed in the Alps Tuesday morning en route to Dusseldorf, Germany from Barcelona, Spain, French officials said.

Debris was scattered at an altitude of 2,000 meters, French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

He expected “an extremely long and extremely difficult” search and rescue operation,” Brandet told BFM television.

“We do not yet know what has happened to flight 4U 9525,” Lufthansa, the German airline which operates the low-cost Germanwings service, said in a statement by spokesman Carsten Spohr.

“My deepest sympathy goes to the families and friends of our passengers and crew on 4U 9525. If our fears are confirmed this is a dark day for Lufthansa. We hope to find survivors.”

Eric Ciotti, the head of the regional council, said search-and-rescue teams were headed to the crash site at Meolans-Revels. The flight crashed between Digne and Barcelonnette in a spot about 100 kilometres north of the city of Nice.
French television network TF1 reported that Alain Vidalies, secretary of the Transport Ministry, said two helicopters had found the plane. “The helicopter overflight has located the shell of the airplane and some bodies around the plane,” he said.

In a televised address, Hollande said that “the conditions of the crash. . . lead us to believe that there will be no survivors.”

Hollande said that the identities of the plane’s passengers were still unknown. He said he was in contact with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the King of Spain, Felipe VI, since many of the passengers are believed to be German and Spanish nationals.

“It's a tragedy, a new aerial tragedy,” Hollande said.

Airbus said it is aware of the reports of a crash but could not confirm.

Eduardo Galicia, a press manager at Airbus in Toulouse, told the Star around 7:20 a.m. (Toronto time) that the company had no additional information. “At this stage, it's too early,” he said.

Pierre-Martin Charpenel, the mayor of Barcelonnette, told France 24 that local firefighters and ambulance workers were on the way to the crash site.

“Flight 4U9525 initially climbed to 38,000 feet before it started to descend and lost signal at 6,800 feet,” Flight Radar 24 reported on its Twitter feed.

Flight Radar says the signal was lost at 9:41 UTC (5:41 Eastern time). The plane “was descending with a rate of about 3,000 to 4,000 feet per minute, which is quite standard for an airport approach.”

It described the plane as “one of the oldest A320, delivered in November, 1990.”
