Former Portuguese Prime Minister and ex - European Commission President Durão Barroso is in Austria this weekend where he is being groomed to take over from Portuguese media magnate Francisco Pinto Balsemão on the Bilderberg steering committee, one of the world’s most influential and secret clubs.

page1_Barroso.jpg

While there has been no of-
ficial announcement of
his climb up the
Bilderberg ladder, the news of Barroso’s “promotion” was revealed this week by Visão magazine, one of the many national media outlets owned by Francisco Pinto Balsemão, 77, himself a former Portuguese Prime Minister and founder of the ruling Social Democratic Party.
But Barroso is not a newcomer to this secret gathering of political leaders and experts from industry, finance, academia and the media, with this week’s meeting in Telfs-Buchen, Austria being his sixth or seventh appearance at the conference.
According to fellow Bilderberger and former Portuguese Minister Nuno Morais Sarmento, the decision to place Barroso on the steering committee was easy to foresee. In comments to Visão magazine, he explains that Pinto Balsemão and Barroso “have a close relationship, which is the result of mutual admiration. To me, this makes perfect sense. There is no better Portuguese to have been chosen.”
Perhaps Barroso’s most notable visit came in June 2004 when he became the first acting Portuguese Prime Minister to attend.
Previously, attendees such as Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, former Portuguese Prime Ministers José Sócrates and Pedro Santana Lopes had been invited prior to taking charge of their respective countries.
Ricardo Salgado, former CEO of the collapsed BES bank, has also attended the conference in the past, with his great uncle Manuel Espírito Santo, regularly entertaining Bilderberg founder Prince Bernard of Holland at his home in Lisbon prior to the Portuguese Revolution.
But as it turns out, Barroso’s presence in 2004 was well-timed, as four months later he resigned as prime minister and was unveiled as the new European Commission president, a position he held for ten years.
The conference, which started on Thursday and runs through to Sunday, now in its 33rd year, will have around 140 participants present from 22 countries.
The meeting is usually held at the beginning of June, and normally follows the G7 summit.
Organisers of the event have, in recent years, become more public as to the nature of the event, and have this week issued a statement explaining that the conference is designed to “foster dialogue between Europe and North America.”
They further reveal that “the participants are not bound by the conventions of their office or by pre-agreed positions. As such, they can take time to listen, reflect and gather insights.
“There is no detailed agenda, no resolutions are proposed, no votes are taken, and no policy statements are issued”, the statement explains.
But despite stressing the informal nature of the four-day meeting, participants have been told that items up for discussion this year will include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, chemical weapon threats, current economic issues, European strategy, globalisation, Greece, Iran, the Middle East, NATO, Russia, terrorism, the United Kingdom, the USA and the all important US Elections.
Besides Durão Barroso and Francisco Balsemão, a third Portuguese national, former Socialist-government minister and European Justice Commissioner António Vitorino, has been invited to attend.
In keeping with previous years, the two largest political parties in Portugal will once again be represented.
Other international guests include British Chancellor George Osborne, prime ministers, a strong contingent from Google and CEOs from banks, the oil and the arms industries.
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary will be making his debut at the Bilderberg conference, and will be surrounded by a number of influential bankers from the likes of the ECB, HSBC, Banco Santander, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs.
With such powerful attendees and lack of information emanating from the conference, the Bilderbergs have come under regular scrutiny and have been successively accused of orchestrating a new world order with the aid of mostly unelected officials.
The Guardian this week published a piece under the headline ‘Forget the G7 summit – Bilderberg is where the big guns go’, and in explaining the meeting, assumed a tongue-in-cheek line when Charlie Skelton wrote: “With participants this powerful, and an agenda containing this many hot topics, the Telfs policy conference is sure to be covered in depth by the world’s press. And by ‘sure to be’, I mean probably won’t be. For reasons that, as ever, escape me.”

"Kissinger: The trick in the world now is to use economics to build a world political structure."

Goldman Sachs at Center of Politics, Money and Public Furor Once Again
Trump’s Treasury pick is one of a long line of Goldman alumni in Washington

Heading into the 2016 presidential election, most executives on Wall Street would have said one thing was certain no matter who won: The next Treasury secretary wouldn’t come from Goldman Sachs GroupInc.

That reflected the view that Goldman was so tainted in the public mind by the financial crisis that none of its alumni could be floated, much less confirmed, to top government positions.

Like so much other conventional wisdom, that has now proved to be wrong. President-elect Donald Trump is set to name Steven Mnuchin , a Goldman alum, as Treasury secretary.

Who Is Steven Mnuchin, Trump’s Treasury Pick?

President-elect Donald Trump turned to former Goldman Sachs banker and movie financier Steven Mnuchin to be the next Treasury secretary. WSJ’s Rick Carew takes a look at his background. Photo: Getty
Mr. Mnuchin worked at the company for 17 years. Most of his time was spent in Goldman’s mortgage-trading business in the early 1990s, though he also oversaw its internet strategy, which resulted in a flopped online wealth-brokerage effort in the early 2000s.

Mr. Mnuchin made partner in 1994, the same class that produced Goldman’s current No. 2, Gary Cohn. Mr. Cohn met with Mr. Trump Tuesday.

If Mr. Mnuchin is confirmed as Treasury secretary, he will be the third former Goldman banker to hold the position in less than 25 years. Robert Rubin served in this role in President Bill Clinton’s second term and Henry Paulson Jr. occupied the spot in President George W. Bush’s second term and brought Goldman banker Robert Steel along as his deputy.
While the firm’s critics have pointed to its extensive ties to government as a sign of Wall Street’s outsize influence, Goldman partners have long viewed public service as an important coda to a finance career.

And the firm’s government ties extend well beyond the Treasury.

William Dudley, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, spent a decade as a Goldman’s chief economist. Joshua Bolten, a legal- and regulatory-affairs executive at Goldman in the 1990s, served as President George W. Bush’s chief of staff, and Steve Friedman, who was among the Goldman partners who rang the New York Stock Exchange bell at the bank’s 1999 debut, served as a senior economic counselor in that administration. Gary Gensler, head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission under President Barack Obama and the finance chief of Hillary Clinton’s campaign, was one of the youngest bankers ever named a partner at Goldman.

Goldman’s government reach isn’t confined to the U.S. Bank of England Gov. Mark Carney, who was previously head of Canada’s central bank, was a Goldman banker for 13 years in its London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto offices.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi was a vice chairman and managing director in the firm’s international business from 2002 to 2005.Goldman advisers and former employees have served as governors of the central banks of Australia, Greece and South Africa.

The funnel that has sent Goldman executives to Washington dates to the bank’s longtime leader, Sidney Weinberg. Mr. Weinberg, who ran Goldman for more than three decades and oversaw its rise from scrappy second-tier firm to the investment-banking elite, was a supporter and close friend of President Lyndon Johnson, to whom he recommended several men to key cabinet posts.

His influence in the White House elevated Goldman’s status in Washington, a position it solidified during the 1990s and early 2000s.

That Goldman is again back at the pinnacle of the U.S. government is a stunning turnaround from the drubbing its image took during the financial crisis. Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein and other executives were hauled before Congress over trades involving complex financial instruments that were believed to have fueled the financial meltdown.

In 2010, Goldman became the face of Wall Street and the crisis thanks to a damning article in Rolling Stone. The magazine called Goldman “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money.”

In the wake of that, Goldman, which long focused only on its reputation with clients, undertook steps to burnish its public image. It boosted its philanthropic efforts, which now support women entrepreneurs and small businesses. Today, Goldman has a consumer bank and weekly podcasts.

“We try not to be tone-deaf and we listen closely,” Mr. Blankfein said recently when asked about his firm’s reputation. “It’s not in as low ebb as it was in the heart of the financial crisis [but] it’s still low ebb. We have to work on that and we know that.”
