Jihadist gunman who shot Russian ambassador identified, member of “special ops unit”

DECEMBER 19, 2016 4:41 PM BY CHRISTINE WILLIAMS8 COMMENTS

The gunman who shot Andrey Karlov, Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, has been identified as a Turkish police officer Mevlut Mert Altintas. He was reportedly a “member of the special ops unit in Ankara.” According to eyewitness accounts, he was heard shouting: “We die in Aleppo, you die here” and “don’t forget Aleppo, Syria.”

Altintas stood behind Karlov as he “gave a speech at an art gallery in the Turkish capital.” Then, only moments later, Altintas drew a handgun and shot the ambassador “nine times before reportedly shouting ‘Allahu Akbar.'”

Meanwhile, “Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the killing of the Russian ambassador to Ankara is designed to spoil Russo-Turkish ties.” Obviously.

“Gunman who shot Russian ambassador to Turkey named by Interior Minister”, by Will Worley, UK Independent, December 19, 2016:

The gunman who shot dead the Russian ambassador to Turkey has been named as Mevlut Mert Altintas.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said he was 22 years-old and worked for the police riot squad in Ankara for the past two-and-a-half years, PA reported.

Security sources told Reuters he was not on duty at the time.

Ambassador Andrey Karlov was speaking at an art exhibition in Ankara when the gunman opened fire.

The attacker had been stood alone, wearing a dark suit, behind Mr Karlov as he spoke.

Numerous shots were heard, before the attacker launched into a diatribe on the beleagured city of Aleppo in Syria.

“We die in Aleppo, you die here” and “don’t forget Aleppo, Syria,” were heard shouted by the gunman during the attack.

The city has been subject to an intense Russian bombardment in recent weeks…..

DUSSELDOFRF, November 24. /TASS/. Relations between Russia and Germany should improve, Russia is important for the settlement of global conflicts, German Vice-Chancellor and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel said in Dusseldorf on Thursday.

"Relations between Germany and Russia can and should become better once again. We in Europe and in Germany must be interested in relations with Russia as with a reliable partner, we need Russia to settle a number of conflicts,’ he said.

"I believe that despite differences, it is necessary to use all possibilities to keep the dialog going and maintain contacts," the vice chancellor said.

A gradual implementation of the Minsk agreements should lead to a gradual lifting of sanctions imposed on Russia over the developments in Ukraine, Sigmar Gabriel also said.

"My position is that we must use progress in the implementation of the agreement to gradually lift sanctions," the vice-chancellor said. "It is not clever to stick to the position under which the agreement must be implemented by 100%, and then sanctions must be lifted by 100%," he said.

The official said Europe and Germany saw the development of the events in Ukraine as violation of international law. "Russia interprets these events absolutely differently, but sanctions have affected our economic relations," he noted. "That is why, it is important that we do our best for the implementation of Minsk (agreements)," the German minister said.

"I believe that despite differences, it is necessary to use all possibilities to keep the dialog going and maintain contacts," the vice chancellor said also.

The Package of Measures, known as Minsk-2, envisaged a ceasefire between Ukrainian government forces and people’s militias in the self-proclaimed republics in Donetsk and Lugansk starting from February 15 and subsequent withdrawal of heavy weapons from the line of engagement. The deal also laid out a roadmap for a lasting settlement in Ukraine, including local elections and constitutional reform to give more autonomy to the war-torn eastern regions.

In a situation when not all political mechanisms are working smoothly, business formats may help develop ideas that will create a basis for future economic partnership, Dvorkovich said.
DUSSELDORF, November 24. /TASS/. Russian is interested in Germany’s assistance in the modernization of its economy, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said on Thursday.

"We should resume partnership for the sake of modernization first of all, since Russia is lagging behind Germany from the economic point of view and we are interested in modernization of Russia," he said at a Russian-German business forum. "We are confident that there are niches where we can work together, produce new technologies, products and services no one in the world makes which will be in demand by future generations decades after."

The Russia deputy prime minister said the two countries have cooperation potential in such spheres as 4.0 industrial revolution and Internet+. However, in his words, the energy sector is the driving force of technological development. "It is this sector, bearing in mind its scale and resources, that generates cutting-edge technologies, advanced R&D ideas," he stressed.

In a situation when not all political mechanisms are working smoothly, business formats may help develop ideas that will create a basis for future economic partnership across the Bigger Europe, Dvorkovich added.
