Lorry driver Abu Fawzi thought it was going to be just another job.

He drives an 18-wheeler across some of the most dangerous territory in northern Syria. Bombed-out bridges, deep desert sand, even government forces and so-called Islamic State fighters don’t stand in the way of a delivery.

But this time, his load was to be human cargo. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters opposed to IS, wanted him to lead a convoy that would take hundreds of families displaced by fighting from the town of Tabqa on the Euphrates river to a camp further north.

The job would take six hours, maximum – or at least that’s what he was told.

But when he and his fellow drivers assembled their convoy early on 12 October, they realised they had been lied to.

Instead, it would take three days of hard driving, carrying a deadly cargo – hundreds of IS fighters, their families and tonnes of weapons and ammunition.

Abu Fawzi and dozens of other drivers were promised thousands of dollars for the task but it had to remain secret.

The deal to let IS fighters escape from Raqqa – de facto capital of their self-declared caliphate – had been arranged by local officials. It came after four months of fighting that left the city obliterated and almost devoid of people. It would spare lives and bring fighting to an end. The lives of the Arab, Kurdish and other fighters opposing IS would be spared.

But it also enabled many hundreds of IS fighters to escape from the city. At the time, neither the US and British-led coalition, nor the SDF, which it backs, wanted to admit their part.

Has the pact, which stood as Raqqa’s dirty secret, unleashed a threat to the outside world – one that has enabled militants to spread far and wide across Syria and beyond?

Great pains were taken to hide it from the world. But the BBC has spoken to dozens of people who were either on the convoy, or observed it, and to the men who negotiated the deal.

ANTIMEDIA Op-ed) — On November 13, 2017, the BBC dropped a bombshell report that exposed how the U.S. cut a secret deal with “hundreds” of ISIS fighters and their families to leave the Syrian city of Raqqa under the “gaze of the U.S. and British-led coalition and Kurdish-led forces who control the city.” The convoys reportedly included some of ISIS’ “most notorious” members, as well as its foreign fighters and tonnes of weapons and ammunition.

Almost a month later, Reuters reported that a high-level defector from Kurdish-led forces in Syria had revealed that the number of ISIS fighters given safe passage by the U.S.-led coalition was actually in the thousands, not hundreds. This account was seconded by a security official in Turkey despite the fact that Turkey and the Kurdish militia do not typically see eye to eye).

“Agreement was reached for the terrorists to leave, about 4,000 people, them and their families,” the defector said, as quoted by Reuters, adding that all but about 500 were fighters.

The defector also noted that the fighters were headed toward Deir ez-Zor, Syria’s most oil-rich region. The U.S. had been eager to bomb Deir ez-Zor for some time prior to the deal, and allowing ISIS safe passage to get there would merely give them the pretext to do so. In June of this year, regional outlet Al-Masdar released a video that appeared to show convoys of ISIS fighters leaving Raqqa, as well, though the media paid very little attention to this.

All of this begs the question: If the U.S. allowed 4,000 ISIS fighters to leave Raqqa, who on earth were they bombing during their brutal siege? Donald Trump’s illegal air campaign killed well over 1,800 civilians and brought the city to ruin — to the point that Russia accused the U.S. of wiping Raqqa “off the face of the earth.” The U.S. government knew ISIS was leaving the city safely but kept on bombing it into devastation, anyway.

Raqqa Secret Deal Barely Scratches the Surface

Now that we know the U.S. is amenable to granting ISIS fighters safe passage, ISIS’ ability to take over huge swaths of Iraq and Syria in the first place start to make a bit more sense. In June 2014, ISIS effortlessly took the strategic oil-rich cities of Mosul and Baiji and almost made it as far as Baghdad. The U.S. sat on its hands and did nothing the entire time, even as the militants took massive loads of American military equipment as spoils and brandished it all over social media. While ISIS was flaunting its activities untouched by the American military in Iraq, the U.S. was busy launching drone strikes in Pakistan, instead.

Why would the Obama administration prioritize air strikes in a country that overwhelmingly disapproves of them when it could have prevented ISIS from setting up a mini-state in Iraq at the same time?

Over the last few years, we have seen this similar pattern occur over and over again. When it came to Obama’s grand offensive to retake Mosul in 2016, reports also began emerging that the U.S. was granting safe passage for ISIS fighters to move from Mosul into Raqqa. Even if the U.S. hadn’t cut a formal deal with ISIS on this particular occasion, the reality on the ground was that the U.S. was allowing ISIS fighters to make their way into Syria from Mosul and doing little to stop them regardless. As Anti-Media documented at the time:

“According to Army Lieutenant General Talib Shaghati, as reported by anti-Russian newspaper, the Guardian, ISIS militants are already fleeing Mosul to Syria. This was further confirmed by the Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, who said that if ISIS were forced out of Mosul, they would likely go on to Syria.”

Why weren’t they striking these traveling ISIS fighters before they made it to Syria? When viewed in its recent historical context and with the most recent reports in mind, the answer to that question should be clear.

The U.S. Has Also Provided ISIS With Direct Air Support

The Syrian government and its allies are the most heavily engaged entities fighting ISIS inside Syria – not the U.S. military (or its allies). Yet the U.S. military has struck these pro-government forces directly multiple times over the last year, even when these troops have proven to be very effective against the jihadist group.

In September 2016, the U.S.-led coalition launched a barrage of airstrikes at Syrian government troops who were fending off the ISIS component of Deir ez-Zor at the time. Russia accused the U.S. coalition of providing air cover for ISIS because the terror group used the coalition strike to launch an offensive of their own. Over 60 Syrian soldiers died as a result of this illegal act of war, but no one was held accountable.

It has also been speculated that U.S. President Donald Trump’s Syria strike in April paved the way for an ISIS offensive, as well.

ISIS Took Advantage of U.S. Weapons Transfers

So far, we know that ISIS has received safe passage from the U.S. on at least one occasion and that the terror group has also received free air support on a number of other occasions. We also know the U.S. either directly or indirectly allowed ISIS to gain territory in the first place only to provide the pretext for a military intervention.

But wait, it gets even better. Just this month, a report conducted by the U.K.-based Conflict Armament Research (CAR) group, which analyzed 40,000 items its investigators recovered along ISIS’ front lines between July 2014 and November 2017, found that the terror group was able to successfully arm itself by taking advantage of U.S. weapons transfers between Washington and its other allies in Syria. ISIS even garnered some of the more powerful anti-tank missiles through the CIA’s covert arms program.

“International weapon supplies to factions in the Syrian conflict have significantly augmented the quantity and quality of weapons available to IS forces — in numbers far beyond those that would have been available to the group through battlefield capture alone,” the report said.

The U.S. didn’t need to wait for an official report for this horrifying development to come to light. As far back as October 2012, the New York Times reported the following:

“[M]ost of the arms shipped at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to supply Syrian rebel groups fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad are going to hard-line Islamic jihadists, and not the more secular opposition groups that the West wants to bolster…” [emphasis added]

Even if the U.S. had zero control over ISIS and the mayhem it has exacted over Iraq, Syria, and beyond — and was genuine in its bid to rid the world of its ideology and the horror the terror group has unleashed — there is one issue yet to be discussed: ISIS’ existence.

US Created Conditions for ISIS to Exist

ISIS evolved out of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), which only became a formidable fighting force after the U.S. invaded in 2003. This was in part due to the Bush administration’s decision to fire close to 400,000 servicemen in Iraq, simply because of their affiliation with Saddam Hussein’s secular Baathist party. Some of these disgruntled servicemen now hold senior ISIS positions and are responsible for the terror group’s success.

History clearly demonstrates that al-Qaeda only exists in the first place because the U.S. actively trained, funded, and armed the mujahideen in Afghanistan as a means of bogging the Soviet empire down into a quagmire. The Independent even ran a story on Osama bin Laden at the time, portraying him as a heroic freedom fighter and “anti-Soviet warrior.”

However, since 9/11, the U.S. made a specific point of making aiding and providing material support to al-Qaeda and its affiliated organizations a crime under U.S. law. Yet the U.S. has openly aided Syria’s al-Qaeda branch, as well as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in Yemen, and now we have more than enough formal proof that the U.S. has knowingly continued a foreign policy strategy that essentially provided all manner of material support to ISIS, one of the most deadly terror groups in recent history, as well.

It’s time for someone to be held accountable. There is a case to be made against the U.S. for some very serious criminal behavior here, and if anyone is serious about defeating “radical Islamic terror,” they should start by launching a court action against the U.S. government for its die-hard support for terrorism in the Middle East and beyond.

Aunque a primera vista estos versos podrían referirse a alguna campaña bélica islámica del pasado, ya que se habla de "trirremes", creemos que otros de los elementos contenidos en las estrofas, permiten aclarar que se trata de hechos aún no sucedidos. En primer lugar, debe tenerse en cuenta que Nostradamus no tiene inconveniente en designar las cosas por los nombres corrientes de su época o indistintamente por los de épocas pasadas y por ello los "trirremes" a que alude no indican que se trata necesariamente de naves de los siglos anteriores a su propia época, sino que alude a naves de guerra de gran calado, aunque no tengan varias hileras de remos. Ahora bien, esta interpretación se refuerza si consideramos que los hechos contenidos en esta cuarteta realmente no han ocurrido después de haber sido nombrados por el vidente en el siglo XVI, pues se dice que el jefe de Persia (hoy Irán), después de llenar grandes bajeles, los dirigirá contra gente musulmana, es decir, contra los turcos aliados de los occidentales y vendrá de Partia y Media, nombres de antiguos territorios que formaron el gran Imperio persa en la Antigüedad. Estos hechos no han sucedido en el pasado y lo que ha ocurrido ha sido precisamente todo lo contrario, ya que en los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII fueron los turcos otomanos quienes atacaron a los persas.

Trebizonda es un puerto turco en el mar Negro, que es donde, según la profecía, se iniciará la contienda. Esta ciudad está cerca de Armenia y actualmente se llama Trabzon y fue importante en la Edad Media al ser la capital de un Estado fundado por el emperador bizantino Alejo Comneno. Fato es un brazo del río Nilo llamado Fatmético y Methelin es la antigua Mitilene, ciudad de la isla griega del mismo nombre, antiguamente Lesbos. Estas referencias geográficas aluden por tanto a Turquía, Egipto y Grecia, países que serán atacados por el enemigo procedente de Persia, hecho que ocurrirá en verano ("Sol alegre"); al hablar de Adria, el vidente se refiere indudablemente al mar Adriático situado entre los Balcanes y la península itálica, del cual dice la cuarteta que "se cubrirá de sangre árabe", frase equívoca que no alude a una derrota marítima de los musulmanes, como lo han interpretado algunos de los estudiosos de las profecías, sino que, más de acuerdo con el contexto y contenido de la cuarteta, y también con la cronología en ella implícita, significa que un gran número de navíos islámicos, surcarán las aguas de dicho mar al comenzar la gran invasión. Como más adelante se verá, los franceses y sus aliados sufrirán allí una gran derrota al fracasar en su intento de contener el avance musulmán sobre Italia.

En resumen, estos versos son muy esclarecedores e importantes porque indican, sin lugar a dudas, cuáles serán las primeras operaciones de la tercera guerra mundial en las que los islámicos tomarán la iniciativa atacando, casi simultáneamente, a Turquía ("vendrá de Persia para ocupar Trebizonda"), Egipto (Fato, brazo del Nilo), las islas griegas (Mitilene) y por mar, sobre el Adriático. Debe observarse que Nostradamus no tiene mucha precisión ni al denominar lugares ni fuerzas contendientes, pues como ocurre en varias estrofas habla de "árabes" para nombrar a los persas o mahometanos en general y, como es bien sabido, tal nombre corresponde propiamente a una denominación étnica de los pueblos de la península arábiga; en tal sentido ni los iraníes, ni los libios, ni los afganos son árabes, sino que todos ellos son islámicos o musulmanes, denominaciones genéricas mucho más apropiadas.

Los eclipses de que habla la tercera línea, obviamente constituyen un referente cronológico para indicar la época en que los invasores llegarán a Hungría, la antigua provincia romana de Panonia, pues los ejércitos contrarios han huido precipitadamente y los invasores avanzan, incontenibles, a partir de Grecia y Estambul (Bizancio) hacia el norte, explicando el vidente que turbarán a Europa "y a casi todo el universo", reveladora frase que indica, sin reticencias, el alcance mundial del gran conflicto islam-Occidente. A los húngaros, finaliza la cuarteta, se les enviarán los refuerzos que necesitan desesperadamente, que para ellos son, obviamente, "de vida o muerte".

La violación como arma de destrucción

Arte presenta a dos ganadores del Premio Nobel de la Paz: La jesidesa Nadia Murad es testigo del genocidio de su pueblo. Denis Mukwege opera a víctimas de violencia sexual graves.

Cuando se otorgue el Premio Nobel de la Paz 2018 el 10 de diciembre, los ganadores de este año, Nadia Murad y el Dr. Denis Mukwege, recibirán un agradecimiento conmovedor. Con lágrimas en los ojos, como en diciembre de 2015, cuando la joven iraquí Yezidin habló ante el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU del genocidio de su pueblo por parte de la milicia terrorista IS, de su propio secuestro en agosto de 2014 y de su supervivencia como esclava sexual.

En cada aparición como activista, ya sea ante el Congreso Americano, el Parlamento Canadiense o en programas de radio, Nadia Murad es alentada a revivir su trauma para todos nosotros una y otra vez. Para hablar de su familia, cuyos numerosos miembros están muertos o desaparecidos. Y sobre la época en el campo de refugiados, que ella describe como el infierno, antes de su tratamiento en Alemania. La joven de veinticinco años habla en voz baja y con moderación. Su informe es claro, objetivo, directo y chocante. ¿Y políticamente intrascendente?

El ginecólogo congoleño, Dr. Denis Mukwege, que recibió el Premio Nobel Alternativo en 2013 y el Premio Sajarov, hijo de un pastor popular, lleva años haciendo lo mismo. Si no opera las mutilaciones más horribles bajo la protección del casco azul de la ONU in situ, habla en todo el mundo de las atrocidades de los rebeldes hutus y tutsi y de las tropas gubernamentales en la República Democrática del Congo, que se perpetran deliberadamente contra niñas y mujeres. Mukwege es un experto en el tratamiento de lesiones causadas por violaciones en grupo. Tanto Nadia Murad como Denis Mukwege merecen ser honrados por el Comité del Premio Nobel y los fondos correspondientes para sus campañas.

Pero, la pregunta central es: ¿qué generará realmente el Premio Nobel de la Paz en términos de atención pública mundial adicional y, sobre todo, en términos de apoyo directo a la política (mundial), tanto para la lucha contra la violación como medio de destrucción como para una estrategia de guerra? Ambos han producido libros conmovedores que trazan la historia de sus vidas y describen los motivos detrás de su compromiso.

La película de Alejandria Bombach sobre Nadia Murad es reservada a pesar o incluso debido a los crímenes descritos. Un retrato sensible, que tampoco omite la ambivalencia de la indeseada fama de activista. Alexandria Bombachs muestra a Nadia Murad no sólo como representante y en el papel que se le ha asignado. Ella mira suavemente a la persona en su totalidad. Una vez quiso abrir una peluquería, nos cuenta Nadia Murad. Animar a las mujeres a desarrollar su confianza en sí mismas a través de la belleza. Ahora son entregados en grandes escenarios políticos. Alexandria Bombach muestra la reciente y diferente pérdida de autodeterminación de esta joven mujer de manera bastante casual.

La película sobre Denis Mukwege de Thierry Michel es ya del año 2015, más convencional, pero impresiona inmensamente por la personalidad representada. En el quirófano, donde la cámara puede ser testigo, al igual que los cirujanos, a los que les muestra las lesiones internas y discute las posibles operaciones, que apenas creían posibles, el médico se enoja increíblemente. Cuando se le pregunta por qué está tan comprometido, Mukwege tiene una supuesta contra pregunta: "¿Cómo podemos permanecer en silencio? Nadia Murad también responde de manera similar.
